"Alright, but you need to learn to forgive yourself first," Simon said.
Simon kissed me on the cheek again, and I wanted so much more. I couldnât get enough of his tender touches, of his sweet kisses.
Feeling bold, I embraced him. Simon simply held me. Cocooned in his warmth, I realized how lucky I was to have this wonderful man by my side.
Even now, I knew I didnât deserve him, but Simon was mine, and he said he was planning on sticking right by my side.
For the first time since Duane caught Ethan and me leaving the flock house, hope burned inside me like a bright flame.
âIâll call Zack over,â Simon said.
He pressed a gentle kiss to my mouth before leaving, as if he knew I needed the extra reassurance.
With nothing else to do but wait, I paced the length of the small room.
Five minutes later, Simon returned with Zack. Thankfully, Zackâs scary vampire mate was nowhere in sight.
For someone whoâd been stabbed three days ago, Zack looked better than I imagined.
He could walk on his own for one, and his face certainly had more color.
âElliot,â Zack said, inclining his head. He had chosen to sit on the wooden chair next to the desk. âSimon told me you have something important to tell us?â
âFirst of all, I wanted to apologize for everything,â I began. After taking a deep breath, I continued, âFor lying to Simon, you, and the rest of your flock. For trying to take your life.â I grimaced at my last three words. A less understanding lead alpha would have ordered me killed for my actions.
Simon sat on the edge of the bed. Simon patted the space next to him. Relieved, I joined him.
The bed was so narrow that our shoulders and legs were touching. Simonâs presence next to me gave me comfort and the courage to tell his lead alpha the truth.
So I repeated what I told Simon earlier.
âThe leader of the Salt Stone Flock, you mentioned his name was Duane?â Zack asked, furrowing his brows.
âDuane Dixon,â I confirmed.
âZack, do you know him?â Simon asked. âWhy does Duane want you dead in the first place?â
âIâve asked his second, Ray, about that. Ray simply told me to mind my own business,â I said.
âBig, blond, blue-eyed, and comes with a horrible personality?â Zack asked.
I nodded in confirmation. Initially, I was worried about this meeting, but now, curiosity got the better of me.
I wondered what Duaneâs connection to Zack was because the two men were exact opposites.
âHow do you know Duane?â I asked.
âDuane used to be a member of my first flock,â Zack confirmed, looking deeply troubled. âHe was ambitious and wanted to become one of our enforcers. I knew he wasnât a good fit from the start.â
âWhat did he do?â Simon asked.
âNearly killed another alpha outside of the challenge circle. Duane also received complaints from three omegas. They said he was too pushy. If I didnât look into his behavior, more ravens would have gotten hurt,â Zack said.
I silently processed his words.
